Hitar Petar (Bulgarian
for "Clever Peter") is the hero of numberous folk tales based in the time of the Turkish rule over Bulgaria. Hitar Petar is a poor trickster who frequently battles wits with a turkish priest "Nostradin Hodja" and others. These light-hearted tales seem portray the Bulgarian desire to out-wit their oppressors.
